Branding the Yukon

The latest branding campaign I shot in late July has now been launched so I'm able to share a few images from the shoots. The concept was to show off the territory, the modern capital city of the Yukon and use real employees at the Yukon Public Service.
In short, a recruitment campaign for both Yukoners and outsiders.

Midlyn Day Communications, out of Vancouver, created "It goes with the Territory", who boast, "They are the leaders in employer branding in BC. Finding the right people for the right jobs."
They were a great group of people to work with. Along with sending me good specs of what they were looking for, they were equally open to my vision too. A real bonus for a photographer not to just end up being a shutter pusher!

The shoots were scheduled over the course of two days and those two days were sunny and a slightly windy. A lot of people think blue sky and hot sun is a bonus on a photo shoot but not so when you are photographing people outdoors. I had two choices, to add flash to deal with the harsh shadows under people's eyes and nose or to diffuse the sun, which was hitting the models and is the option I went with. I was able to hire both an assistant and make-up/wardrobe person for the shoot, which allowed me to just concentrate on the lighting and shooting. Given the wind at times, many of the shoots were either along the Yukon River or along mountain sides, both my assistant and wardrobe person would be hanging onto the 5 foot white reflector as it threatened to sail off down stream. It was a good workout holding those reflectors for 8+ hours above their heads!

Although the campaign was to show off the territory and a modern city as well as the actual employees that volunteered for the shoots the designers wanted the models to override the locations. So using a very small depth of field created a hint of location. Not shooting wide open but shut down a stop or two for lens sharpness.

Aside from correcting the white balance and applying a light Smart sharpen; the images are pretty much how I shot them. A big thanks you to the models that as I mentioned are actual YPSC employees. They all seemed like naturals in front of the camera. Already looking forward to the next round of shoots!
DIGGING DEEP-Last week's assignment took me underground mining at Keno, about a five hour drive north of Whitehorse. Little to no light, muddy and dripping water made it really challenging but in the end had a great shoot.

BOREAL GOURMET - Is a must have cookbook for any kitchen, you don't have to live north of 60! I have been shooting with Miche Genest for over a year on this project and it will soon be out on the shelves. It has been a great shooting project as well as the fringe benefits of tasting almost every recipe was great too!

DOGS IN CANADA, FIRST TIME NORTH OF 60 - I shot this back in the summer but I wasn't allowed to post it until it hit the stands this week. When I got the call, I thought I love dogs, how hard can this be? Six puppies, four plus hours later, a splitting headache from my assistant banging pots just above my head made me realize how amazing those dog photographers who fill the pages of Dogs in Canada and Bark every month really are.
I now look at each photo with a huge bowl of respect!
WANTED DANGEROUS WINTER ROADS - Shot this Goodyear Tire image minutes after my plane landed home earlier this week. They needed it yesterday but in the end extended the deadline until I returned from the coast. I had an outline to work from but in they chose the image I designed. It was a fast turnaround from the minute the plane touched down but a fun challenge.

COMPLEX SIMPLICITY - Some of the images I like best are ones that exude fun.
If my subject is having fun, so am I.
I shot this image last week for a business magazine and from my years working in newspapers, I shot it as if it were going to be the cover. It wasn't but still.
I used my remote triggers(PW's) and had some fun throwing warming filters, snoots and grids on every flash in my bag to light this. Now I was having fun! By the time Bob Baxter, co-owner of Yukon Brewing Company, climbed up on top of the stack of beer I had four lights all ready to turn the dim, florescent lit brewery into the colour of a glass of Yukon Gold!

If you can't have fun in a brewery? Where can you?
